The
Rural Municipality of Siglunes was incorporated in 1917.
The village of Ashern was named after A. S. Hern, an official
of the firm that constructed the railway that served the
Western Interlake.
To the
northwest of the R. M. lies the Narrows area of Lake Manitoba,
birthplace of our province's name. The Cree called this
area Manitobau, meaning Narrows of the Great Spirit.
Today this region is prime angler country with Master Angler
Awards given here for perch, freshwater drum, northern pike,
walleye and sauger.
Today
the R. M. supports the agricultural, fishing, mineral extraction
on NE 15-23-8(owned by the R. M. ), recreation and tourism
industries. The community of Ashern is the largest community
in the R. M. and is a regional service centre to a trading
area of approximately 8,000 people.
There
are many organizations and facilities in the R. M. of Siglunes
that residents may patronize to stay busy in all seasons
of the year. With a focus on sports, the organizations and
activities offer something for children, young people, and
adults.
During
the winter months there are various sports to partake in:
hockey, curling, figure skating, ringette, snowmobiling,
ice-fishing and cross country skiing. Different levels of
most team sports exist to accommodate the wide range of
ages that play them. Ashern has an indoor skating rink and
a curling rink, both with artificial ice. Summer sports
include: baseball, water sports, swimming, and other favourite
games such as horseshoes. Ashern has a nine hole golf course
with grass greens, watered fairways and a licensed clubhouse.
Ashern
has a community hall, an Elks Hall and a Royal Canadian
Legion Hall that cater to a wide variety of events and community
groups. Wedding socials, bingos, dances, and Christmas concerts
are some of the things that go on throughout the year.
The
local beaches boast fine sand and clear, clean water. Oak
Bay Lodge, Lake Manitoba Narrows Lodge and Silver Bay are
popular places for local cottage owners and seasonal campers.
These areas are privately owned, although camping is available
by reservation for Oak Bay and Lake Manitoba Narrows Lodge.
Lake Manitoba has many sand bars which are ideal for children.
The
Ashern Museum is open during the summer months and contains
several buildings which house pioneer displays and artifacts.
In March,
is the annual winter carnival including a figure skating
ice-show, a hockey tournament, broomball, a social, and
the crowning of the carnival King and Queen.
Ashern's
Annual Rodeo is held Labour Day Weekend and offers good
food and entertainment the whole family can enjoy. Special
events during the weekend include a street dance, fireworks,
rodeo competitions, kids events, and a parade.
The fall months are welcomed by avid hunters as the Siglunes
region is a hunter's paradise.
